Wanted to share with you a commission I did last week. These two were extremely fun to set up, though they were disappointing to render. I gotta be honest; the more I work in Octane, the more disenchanted I become with it. The developers boast the unique ability of the GPU renderer to make changes on-the-fly and see the results real-time. While this is somewhat true, the thing they don’t tell you is that a scene with only a moderate complexity will bring even the strongest PC to its knees, making it virtually impossible to control your mouse enough to hover over the ‘pause’ button to make changes. If/When your PC checks back from rendering to give enough control to move your mouse, it lasts for possibly one second, then is gone again. The developers point out that the ‘solution’ for this is a 2nd GPU to offload all non-rendering computer tasks. I don’t know about you, but a ‘solution’ that requires I buy more hardware (also after I’ve invested $600 just weeks ago on a new 4 GB vidcard) isn’t a ‘solution’ at all.
