One Who Smiles - Concept Art 02Hey, ya’lls. Hope my American brothers and sisters had a relaxing holiday filled with tannins and tryptophan. I am back from my Thanksgiving vacation in San Francisco and it’s business as usual around here. The cloth sims are still taking forever… typically about two hours to calculate all nine simulations for the scene. Also, the actual fighting poses are taking a really long time to pose since I am paying special attention to balance and weight.

Cloth Sims = No Concept Artwork

One Who Smiles - Frame 001Well, I had promised more concept art, but instead I’m just offering up the first frame of the comic to give you a look at the characters and the set. It’s what they call the ‘establishing shot’ in screenwriting and filmmaking. Anyway, Clara will be facing off against her sensei Ryujin as her last trial before earning her black belt. Fighting by her side will be one of Ryujin’s other promising students, a young man named Yoshi. In this intense battle, there is going to be some really funny moments as Ryujin teaches both Clara and Yoshi lessons in humility, patience… and smiling.

The reason I didn’t have time for concept art is because this entire set I decided to use dynamic clothing, which requires running a cloth simulation for every article of clothing. While this offers a more realistic look for their apparel, it requires extra time while the simulation runs for each piece of clothing. On each character. For every frame. Yeah…
